- Stahl war über Klagenfurt in Luftkämpfe mit deutschen Jagdflugzeugen verwickelt. Geschosse trafen dabei ein Triebwerk. Stahl fragte um Begleitschutz an, der ihm bis Gorizia Deckung gab. Dort fing das Triebwerk plötzlich Feuer, Rauch drang in das Cockpit ein und das Flugzeug ging in den Sturzflug über. Stahl konnte sich nicht mehr retten und starb als das Flugzeug am Boden aufschlug.
