- Das Flugzeug war Teil eines Verbandes, der von zahlreichen deutschen Jagdflugzeugen attackiert wurde. Dabei geriet die rechte Tragfläche in Brand und einzelne Besatzungsmitglieder wurden teils schwer verwundet. Als der gesamte Innenraum des Bombers mit Rauch gefüllt war, ließ McCord das Fahrwerk ausfahren, um eine Aufgabe zu signalisieren. Die deutschen Jagdpiloten ließen von ihm ab. McCord gab seiner Besatzung das Signal zum Notausstieg, was allen gelang. Wenig später explodierte das Flugzeug in der Luft. Die Trümmerteile fielen unweit von Vöcklabruck zu Boden.
