- Die Maschine wurde über dem Ziel von Flakgeschossen an der linken Tragfläche getroffen. Diese geriet sofort in Brand und sackte aus der Formation ab. Der Pilot konnte die B-24 kurz stabil halten, sodass ein Großteil der Besatzung von Bord springen konnte. Die Maschine wurde von Jägern angegriffen, - dabei starb Maurer - schlug kurz danach am Boden auf und explodierte.
