- Nahe dem Ziel bekam die Maschine Probleme mit einem Triebwerk und fiel hinter die Formation zurück. Der Bombenlast entledigte man sich mittels Notabwurf. Der Bomber war danach nicht mehr zu halten. Sie wurde von deutschen Jägern attackiert, dabei geriet eine Tragfläche in Brand. Die gesamte Besatzung konnte sich aus der Maschine retten. Die Flieger wurden von deutschen Jägern attackiert und teils schwer verletzt. Whisenant verstarb später an einer Verletzung, die im hierbei zugefügt worden war.
