Die B-24J dürfte in technische Schwierigkeiten geraten und in der Folge abgestürzt sein. Einzelne Besatzungsmitglieder konnten über dem Balaton abspringen. Gerüchte hielten sich, dass einzelne Besatzungsmitglieder von ungarischen Zivilisten ermordet worden wären.
