Die Maschine erhielt einen schweren Flaktreffer, der sie aus der Formation drückte. Der Pilot hielt die Maschine stabil und meldete über Funk, dass er "lot's of troubles" hätte, aber trotzdem die sowjetischen Linien versuchen würde zu erreichen. Über dem Balaton erfassten ihn mehrere FW190. Eine wurde von der Besatzung abgeschossen, worauf sich - angesichts der sowjetischen Linien - die deutschen Jäger zurückzogen. Der Pilot meldete nochmals über Funk, dass er, wenn er ein Notflugfeld finden würde, eine Notlandung versuchen würde. Als Ausweichvariante nannte er "bail out". Fünf Mann sprangen noch auf der deutschen Seite ab.
