- Gearhart sollte am 24. Februar 1944 einen Angriff auf Steyr fliegen. Seine Maschine wurde von einer Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in einen Luftkampf verwickelt und abgeschossen. Gearhart konnte sich mit dem Fallschirm zu Boden retten.
