- Die Maschine befand sich mit vier anderen P-51 auf einer Begleit-Mission für P-38 (Aufklärung). Als die Formation wegen des Wetters umkehren musste, meldete der Pilot Probleme mit der Maschine. Er kündigte über Funk an, dass er sich mittels Fallschirm zu Boden retten wollte. Befragungen nach Kriegsende ergaben, dass die Leiche des Piloten in einem Friedhof beerdigt worden war. Bei der Exhumierung fand man auch die sterblichen Überreste von James S. Gover (O-676050) und Nicholas G. Cilli (O-742681).
