And Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed (Gen 48,2) - in order to pay honour to royalty. Miasha, R. Yehoshuaʿ b. Lewi’s grandson, received a post of authority from the Government. Whenever he entered his house his grandfather would rise before him, in order to pay honour to authority. (Freedman / Simon II 934)
This meaning supported by AC I 80a, MY ad loc. Jastrow I 64b renders “request”, “petition”, similarly also Krauss, Fürst 50a. This semantics is supported by the context in GenR (not mentioned in the dictionaries). See also Sokoloff, SL 44a for Syr. ܐܟܣܝܘܡܐ 〈ʾksywmʾ〉.
