ר' מנחמה בש' ר' ביבי כך ווסתן של אומות העולם, כיון שהיה אחד מהן לוקח לו עבד, היה הולך אצל אסטרולוגוס ואמ' ליה חנא טבא נחשא טבא, אין לשון הזה ותשא אלא לשון אסטרולוגיאה , כמה דאת אמ' ופן תשא עיניך השמימה וגו'

R. Menaḥema said in R. Bibi’s name: This was the practice of the heathens. When one bought a man slave, he would go to an astrologer, who would tell him, ‘If you acquire a good bondmaid, it is an auspicious augury.’ Thus wa-tiśśaʾ (cast her eyes) [Gen 39,7] is a term used of astrology, as in the verse, And lest thou lift up (tiśśaʾ) thine eyes unto heaven etc. (Dtn 4,19) (Freedman / Simon II 808)
