R. Huna, reporting R. Yermeya in the name of R. Shemuʾel b. R. Yiṣḥaq, said: The intention to create Israel preceded everything else. This may be illustrated thus: A king was married to a certain lady, and had no son by her. On one occasion the king was found going through the marketplace and giving orders: ‘Take this ink, inkwell and pen for my son,’ at which people remarked: ‘He has no son: what does he want with ink and pen? Strange indeed!’ Subsequently they concluded: ‘The king is an astrologer, and he has actually foreseen that he is destined to beget a son!’ Thus, had not the Holy One, blessed be He, foreseen that after twenty-six generations Israel would receive the Torah, he would not have written therein, “Command the children of Israel!” (Friedman/Simon I 7)

Attested only here. Cf. AC IV 145 מל 〈ml〉. Sg form מילן 〈myln〉 or מלן 〈mln〉 is attested in Midrash Yelamdenu acc. to AC IV 145 (not found), cf. Levy III 102. Cf. also AC IV 153 and Jastrow II 774. מלמרין 〈mlmryn〉 in Yalq 766 is a corruption. Cf. Syr. ܡܠܢܝܢ 〈mlnyn〉 (Sokoloff, SL 774). Cf. מלניה 〈mlnyh〉
